Sales of previously-owned US homes rose for the third month in a row in June, and at a quicker rate than expected, an estate agent body has said.
The National Association of Realtors said sales rose 3.6% to an annual rate of 4.89 million last month, up from 4.77 million in May.
But house prices were still down 15.4% on a year ago. The average sale price now stands at $181,000 (£110,000).
Some analysts see the data as more evidence of a US housing recovery.
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has launched her party’s manifesto for September elections, saying she hopes to jettison her coalition partner.
Her conservative CDU have ruled in a grand coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) for four years.
But despite Germany facing a deep recession, she said she hoped to do well enough to take on a new partner.
Tax cuts form the centrepiece of her manifesto – a stance condemned by the SPD as a “tax gift” giveaway.
The plan includes cutting the lowest income tax rate from 14% to 12%, and raising the threshold at which people pay the top rate, 45%, from 52,000 euros to 60,000 euros (£51,000). It has been estimated that it could cost Germany 15 billion euros.
At a conference of the CDU and its Bavarian ally, the CSU, Mrs Merkel defended her handling of the economic crisis, which was opponents say was ponderous.
“We did it differently, we thought about it, we were smart,” she said.
She insisted that setting Germany back on the road to growth was more important than making sure it balanced its budget.
The government has forecast that GDP will fall 6% this year, while budget deficit is expected to soar.
Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck, from the SPD, has called the deficit monstrous”.
A fictional candidate “campaigning” for Germany’s parliamentary elections next month would win 18% of the votes if he stood, an opinion poll suggests.
Horst Schlaemmer is not even a real person, let alone a real candidate.
Played by comedian Hape Kerkeling, the spoof would-be chancellor has spiced up a campaign criticised as dreary.
His campaign slogan “Yes weekend” is inspired by Barack Obama, and he has pledged to replace Germany’s national emblem – the eagle – with a bunny.
Horst Schlaemmer has become so popular that his spoof “campaign launch” was broadcast live on two TV networks and reportedly attracted more than 100 journalists
Iran’s defence minister-designate is on an Interpol “wanted” list over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre in Argentina, the agency has confirmed.
It says it has had a “red notice” for Ahmad Vahidi since 2007 over the Buenos Aires attack that killed 85 people.
Interpol uses red notices to inform its 187 member countries that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a judicial authority.
Israel and Argentina have expressed concern over Mr Vahidi’s nomination.
“This is yet another of [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad’s actions that prove he is a person you cannot deal with,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Andy David told Bloomberg.
“It’s significant, this nomination, but no surprising,” Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman told the Associated Press.
“Iran has always protected terrorists, giving them government posts, but I think never one as high as this one,” he said.
Smokers who start the habit early in life are at greater risk of developing lung cancer than those who start as adults, a study has found.
Scientists are not sure why smokers who start young are susceptible to more long-term damage, but they think it could be linked to the impact of smoking at an age when the lungs are still developing.
Alternatively, it might be because of the cumulative effect of cancer-causing chemicals on lung tissue.
